Our history
2023
Rector Kurenkeeva Gulnara Turdalievna was elected Chairman of the General Meeting of the League of Academic Integrity for 2023. The League of Academic Integrity is an association of organizations of higher and postgraduate education in the Republic of Kazakhstan, whose mission is to improve and improve the quality of education in the country by promoting and implementing the ten fundamental principles of academic integrity.
AlmaU has joined the PRME Champions 2023 program. PRME Champions is the flagship program of PRME, a community of higher education institutions that are signatories of the initiative, whose mission is to develop thinking and practical skills in the field of responsible management in the context of the UN sustainable development agenda.
2022
The educational program of the School of Economics and Finance "Accounting and Auditing" was re-accredited by ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants), a British association of certified accountants, uniting professionals in the field of finance, accounting and auditing until December 31, 2026.
The EP "Accounting and Audit" received accreditation by CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) of the international association of management accounting specialists until December 31, 2024.
The School of Management of Almaty Management University has been successfully accredited in accordance with the certification procedure according to the rules of the Kazakhstan Project Management Association (KAPM), which meets the ICB 4.0 standard of the International Project Management Association (IPMA)
The AlmaU delegation held an off-site meeting of the Board of Trustees of the University in the United States on the basis of a strategic partner, Arizona State University. At the meeting of the Board of Trustees, a new development strategy for AlmaU until 2030 was presented and approved.
15 educational programs are accredited by the Independent Agency for Quality Assurance in Education (IAQA), 7 of which have passed primary accreditation for the period 2022-2027.
Official opening of AlmaU Sharmanov School of Health Sciences. Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences and National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan Toregeldy Sharmanov made a huge contribution to the world and Kazakhstan health care and was awarded the highest award of the World Health Organization - the Leon Bernard medal, he is also the founder and president of the Kazakh Academy of Nutrition. Toregeldy Sharmanuly was awarded the title of Honored Professor of Almaty Management University.
Interactive studio Jalinga has started its work at the university.
On November 15, 2022, the Minister of Science and Higher Education Sayasat Nurbek visited AlmaU.
The development strategies of the university in the field of digitalization and online education have been adopted.
On March 31, AlmaU launched an MBA program in the city of Tashkent together with the partner university Yeoju Technical Institute in Tashkent.
On December 2, AlmaU hosted the First Youth Forum "Innovative Solutions and Leadership in ESG and the UN SDGs".
The III International Conference "Public trust and social capital" was held within the walls of the university.
2021
AlmaU has partnered with Arizona State University to provide world-class entrepreneurial and innovative higher education in Kazakhstan.
Together with "Qazaqfilm" JSC named after Sh.Aimanov, a School of Media and Cinema was opened. The purpose of the school is to train professionals who meet the modern requirements of the media and film market, actively contributing to the development of the creative industry in the country.
The University has a collective work space "QAYNAR BULAQ - The boiling point of Almaty" where everyone can organize or participate in educational and business events for free, teach and study in professional communities, assemble a team to implement a project, find experts or investors.
In June, the Executive MBA Program of the Higher School of Business of Almaty Management University and the Higher School of Management of St. Petersburg University took the 22nd position among the best joint programs of the international QS Executive MBA Rankings 2021 (Joint Programs)
In September, the Graduate School of Business and the School of Hospitality and Tourism of Almaty Management University (AlmaU) officially received the results of joint accreditation from the Association of MBAs (AMBA) and Business Graduates Association (BGA), two of the world's leading organizations in business education.
A book "In search of an effective model of Kazakhstan University" dedicated to the 30th anniversary of Kazakhstan's independence was published in December.
2020
The General MBA program of the Almaty Management University Graduate School of Business is the only one in Kazakhstan entered the TOP 200 of the QS World University Rankings: Global MBA Rankings 2021 and took 23rd place in the ranking of the TOP 25 MBA programs in Asia.
Received institutional re-accreditation of IQAA for the period up to 2024.
The second ice crossing across Lake Balkhash - Uly Balqash Shaqyrady took place.
The President of Almaty Management University Kozhakhmetov A.B. was elected a member of the UN Global Council PRME (United Nations Principles for Responsible Management Education), aimed at developing the UN Global Compact "Principles of Responsible Management Education".
2019
The first ever ice crossing over Lake Balkhash called Uly Balqash Shaqyrady took place. The initiator was Almaty Management University with the support of Nomad Explorer and Turan Express.
In March, Almaty Management University hosted the grand opening of the Fintech Lab.
2018
30th anniversary of the University.
AlmaU Mountain Club university organized the conquest of 30 peaks.
Maksut Zhumaev, a legend of Kazakhstani mountaineering, a student of the MBA AlmaU, one of the 12 people in the world who climbed all 14 eight-thousand-meter peaks without oxygen, made the first trip of 30 ascents - and immediately to Everest!
For the first time in the history of the University, Maksut hoisted the AlmaU flag on the Jomolungma.
2017
Pan Suk Kim, President of Asian Association of experts for public service, professor of "Yonsei" University became an honorary professor of AlmaU.
School of engineering management was opened.
Re-accreditation by CEEMAN was got.
New members joined the Board of Trustees : Chairman of "IPK ZHERSU" Supervisory Board Baurzhan Ospanov, managing director of Administration of International financial centre of Astana Sayasat Nurbek, and also the founder of "Seimar" company Margulan Seisembai. Janat Berdalina, independent director, Chairman of the audit Committee of National Agency for technological development, was elected as Chairman of the Board of Trustees.

Association of entrepreneurial universities of Kazakhstan was initiated.
AlmaU confirmed the reputation of the company №1 in the field of "Education" by the results of "Topzhargan-2016" rating of Kazakhstani companies.
Summer school for entrepreneurs BastauCamp and Jas-Kasipker were organized.
Together with Ministry for religious affairs and civil society of RK and akimat of Mangistau region held "Caspi Camp Leader" camp and first international youth forum of Caspian States.
AlmaU was awarded with CEEMAN Champions Awards-2017 in the category of "Responsible management education".
At AlmaU "Centre for improvement of productivity and quality of production" (Kaidzen center) was opened.
A new campus of AlmaU Knowledge Building was opened.
2 – 3 November – I International conference in Kazakhstan "System of knowledge management in companies and universities: problems and prospects".
АlmaU became 3rd in "Capital" category with the project "AlmaU CARES", in the framework of the contest "HR-brand Award of Central Asia-2017".
AlmaU confirmed the position of the top business schools by Eduniversal international ranking Agency, becoming the 3rd among 68 universities within the geographical zone of Central Asia.

2016
Master’s and MBA programs at AlmaU entered the top-200 of the best programs in the world by Eduniversal international ranking Agency.
A new model of competencies of AlmaU graduates was approved.

AlmaU opened its representative office in Eastern Kazakhstan.

2015
AlmaU confirmed the title of the best business school in Kazakhstan and Central Asia according to the international ranking agency Eduniversal.
In September 23-26, 2015 Almaty hosted the 23rd CEEMAN Annual Conference “Localization vs. Globalization of Management Development in Dynamic Societies”.
AlmaU integrated the new course “Service Learning” to the curriculum of all undergraduate degrees, in which students study one course to serve the community and apply their knowledge in practice by working in nursing homes, homes for the disabled people and other social organizations.
The licenses to conduct 3 doctoral PhD programmes were obtained: 6D050700 «Management», 6D050900 «Finance» and 6D051100 «Marketing».
Master's Programme in "Management" degree took the 1st place in the IQAA ranking.
AlmaU held the Kazakhstan stage of "Skolkovo" Fund’s StartUp Tour - 2015.
March 2 – scientific and practical conference "Social entrepreneurship in the Republic of Kazakhstan" with participation of representatives of universities, business and government.
Jeffrey Bill became an Honorary Professor of University.
The winners of "Unlimited possibilities" contest (for people with disabilities) received 8 social grants for studying MBA program.
July 10 – youth contest of social projects "Change the world around you". Organizers: School of professional and continuing education of Central Asia University, AlmaU and Coca-Cola.
2014
A representative office of International Academy of Business launched in Shymkent with the support of the Chamber of Entrepreneurs of South Kazakhstan region.
EUROBAK CSR Award is obtained for social project “Republican contest “ZachOt” among the mass media covering topic of education”.
“Topzhargan” (“Breakthrough”) award is obtained from Eurasian Business Forum in nomination “For the development of education and science in Kazakhstan”
IAB obtained new status. New name of IAB - Almaty Management University (Alma University, AlmaU).
National accreditation of Independent Kazakhstan Quality Assurance Agency for Education (IQAA) is obtained.
AlmaU entered to the top 10 universities of Kazakhstan and took the 3rd place among the Best Humanitarian and Economic Universities of Kazakhstan according to the national ranking IQAA.
AlmaU took the 1st place in the ranking of Master degree programs “Management” and the 1st place in the bachelor degree program “Management” (according to IQA ranking).
AlmaU entered the top 3 “High competences of graduates”, according to employers’ survey, held by Almaty city administration.
Champions Award by CEEMAN (International Association for Management Development in Dynamic Societies) for “institutional management” is obtained.
IAB entered to the top 300 best business schools in the world, receiving 4 Palmes in EDUNIVERSAL ranking.
Winner of the contest “Orleu -2014” in nomination “Best social partner” among government and non-government organizations, business structures and media of Almaty.
2013
In March, it was created new structure of IAB – School of Public and Social Policy (SPSP), and in fall started two graduate programs “Public Sector Management”, “Management in Healthcare”, “Management in Education” in Aktau and Almaty cities.
9 last courses students of the university was included in the catalog “TOP-100 Best Students of Almaty”. Elite Recruitment Company organized this project with the support of the Office for Youth Policy of Almaty Akimat.
In February, IAB received Honorary Diploma of European Business Association of Kazakhstan (EUROBAK) for outstanding work in the field of corporate social responsibility in nomination “Improving learning environment for children and students”- for organizing socially responsible project “Support of rural schools by the universities of the country”.
In July, IAB entered to the top 20 universities of Kazakhstan, and took 6th place among the best humanitarian-economic universities of Kazakhstan according to the national ranking IQAA.
In August IAB took 2nd place in the ranking of master’s program Management and 2nd place among undergraduate and graduate program ranking at Management and Marketing (according to CBP&AM MES RK).
The Quality Management System of IAB certified by Orion Registrar, Inc., USA with ISO 9001:2008 standards.
In September only HEI of Kazakhstan and Central Asia awarded prestige international accreditation AMBA (Association of MBA's, UK, London) in MBA program for a three years period.
In October, IAB ranked among TOP-300 best business schools of the world, according to the French Rating Agency in the field of higher education Eduniversal, received 4 Palms branch in the league “TOP Business Schools/internationally known 4 Palms”.
31 October -1 November was an International conference “Entrepreneurship and business education in a Changing world”, dedicated to 25th anniversary of Academy. The world class business-forum was attended by 266 participants from 21 countries.
2012
IAB won the contest among employers of Kazakhstan “Senim -2011” in the category “Best Employer in two capitals”.
Senior managers of 48 universities of Kazakhstan were trained in innovative program “MET- Management Education Technology”.
According to the results of Kazakhstan Research Agency Ranking.kz IAB was the second among private universities appropriate to “price-quality”, the fourth among RK universities in “Quality of education through the eyes of major Kazakhstan employers” (ranking.kz) category.
In October, DBA program opened in Astana and made the first intake of students. It was launched a new specialized MBA program – “Healthcare Management” based on the representative in Astana. First group of the joint MBA program of IAB and Sheffield Hallam University launched Joint MBA program in “General and Strategic Management”.
In December, it has been awarded 29 scholarships of international program Bolashak for faculty and staff of IAB, for training in scientific internship in Berkeley-Haas School of Business (USA), Montreux School of Business (Switzerland), as well as universities of South Korea, the Netherlands, Spain.
2011
IAB won silver medal of the competition among employers “Senim-2010” in the category “Best Employer in two capitals”.
IAB was the winner of the contest of Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Kazakhstan “For contribution to the development of civil society in Kazakhstan” in category “Best Company”. Academy became the first private university in Kazakhstan, technically ready to accept students and attendees with disabilities (in violation of the musculoskeletal system and vision), for that educational building were equipped with toilets, ramps and special lift. In the same year, 100% social grants from the principal of IAB for study received bachelor and MBA students for a total amount of $2.5 million KZT.

2010
Since June, 2010 IAB holds the international summer session of Business Education Teachers Academy (BETA), which is aimed at the development of professional skills and personal growth of teachers of Kazakhstan and foreign higher education institutions.
Since 2010 IAB carries out the cultural and linguistic camp "Ulytau" — the project on studying of Kazakh language with the immersion to the language and cultural environment. In summer of 2010 83 persons - managers and specialists of the national companies of the National Welfare Fund "Samruk-Kazyna" became the first participants of the aul camp. In 2011 60 participants underwent the “immersion” in the cultural and linguistic camp "Ulytau".
In 2010 the International Academy of Business opened the representative office in the West Kazakhstan Region (Atyrau).
2009
In 2009 the president-rector of IAB Mr. Asylbek Kozhakhmetov initiated the program “Support of rural schools by the national higher education institutions”; according to this initiative each of 144 Kazakhstan higher education institutions were offered to take under patronage one of 200 rural regions of the country. IAB within the program assumed support of educational institutions for Ayirtau District of the North Kazakhstan Province. Within the program of high school in spring and autumn school vacation secondary school teachers of Ayirtau District were gratuitously invited to Almaty for professional development.
Since 2009 within the Republican competition "ZachOt", which was founded by the International Academy of Business, for the best coverage of hot topics in the sphere of the Kazakhstan education more than 20 Kazakhstan journalists and mass media are awarded every year.
In autumn of 2009 professors of IAB published the book “Express course on entrepreneurship” within the “Business adviser” project — a gratuitous educational and methodical support for individual entrepreneurship in the country, which was carried out by the “Damu” Entrepreneurship Development Fund.
2007
The state certification and inspection of educational activity of the International Academy of Business on the compliance with the requirements, listed on the license, was carried out. According to the order No. 113 dated February 13, 2007 on supervision and certification in the sphere of education and sciences the following was approved:
To certify the International Academy of Business for a period of 5 years.
To consider educational activity of the International Academy of Business as corresponding to the requirements, which are included in the license, with a specialization 050703 - Information systems.
2006
The contract was signed with the Academy of National Economy under the Government of the Russian Federation (ANE) on the joint implementation of the international MBA program “Information management (CIO)” and preparation of the managers, leading the introduction of information systems, defining policy of development of information technologies at the enterprise, was begun. The same year IAB celebrated its majority – 18 years in the market of the business education of Kazakhstan and held the best of the best competition, having defined the names of partners and employees, who received honorable diplomas in various nominations.
2005
IAB was awarded by CAMEQ quality mark as the first higher education institution in Kazakhstan in the sphere of business education which had successfully passed the institutional international accreditation.
2004
The International Business Academy opened a new joint MBA program with specialization "Finance". The Financial Academy under the Government of the Russian Federation (Moscow, Russia) acted as the partner in this program. In 2004 the International Business Academy signed contracts on joint implementation of Doctor's Programs of Business Administration (DBA) with the Maastricht School of Management (the Netherlands) and the Academy of National Economy under the Government of the Russian Federation and launched the first elite program for the group of Kazakhstan top managers.
2003
The contract was signed on cooperation with Liverpool John Moores University (Great Britain) on training of the undergraduates within the program of the double diploma. In the same year IAB on MBA programs won the first place in the rating of business schools of Kazakhstan, which was carried out by the business magazine "National Business" (October, 2003). In 2003 the International Executive MBA program was developed together with the Higher School of Management, HEC (Paris, France). This program became a logic continuation of 12-months program “Master of Professional Management” existing since 1999. The year 2003 became the year of opening of representative office of the International Business Academy in Astana for implementation of MBA programs, organizations of corporate seminars, trainings and rendering of consulting services. Since 2003, within the education system reforming, the educational process according to the higher education program (bachelor degree) began to be carried out on the basis of the credit system of training that had been tested earlier by MBA programs.
2002
By the order of the Ministry of Education and Science No. 34 dated January 18, 2002 the International Business Academy successfully passed the state certification and obtained the termless state license AA No. 0000165 dated February 02, 2002 for conducting educational activity. The same year IAB became the winner of competition “To the XXI century - with overall quality” in the nomination "Education" for the best management system. This year was decisive in the execution of preparation of undergraduate program students according to the program of double diploma, and the memorandum of cooperation with Redingsk University was signed. In 2002 IAB as a trial higher education institution participated in the public accreditation, which was initiated by the Central Asian Foundation for Management Development (CAMAN) that passed as per the criteria of the European Quality Improvement System (EQUIS).

2000
The Institute of Managers has developed and implemented three programs of professional training which became MBA modules at the same time. The same year the implementation of the MBA distance study program was initiated.
2001
Programs of the highest professional training at two faculties on seven specialties were opened: Economics, Marketing and Commerce, Finance and Credits, Accounting and Audit, Economy and Management at the enterprise (by branches), Enterprise Management (by branches), Informatics.
1999
The Institute of Managers of the International Business Academy which continued training of specialists in the field of marketing, management and finance was founded on the basis of short-term programs department of ASM. The same year IAB became the winner of the competition “To the XXI century - with overall quality” in the nomination "Education" for the best management system. The year 1999 is significant for IAB due to signing of the contract on cooperation with the Higher School of Management HEC (Paris, France) with support of the Embassy of France in Kazakhstan, the first admission on the program “Master of professional management” was carried out in the same year.
1998
The contract on cooperation with the Maastricht School of Management (the Netherlands) was signed and the first admission to the specialization “General and Strategic Management” was carried out. The president of the International Academy of Business was awarded with “The education expert of the Republic of Kazakhstan”.
1997
The first day-time program with specialization “Marketing and PR” and the first MPA modular program (Master of Public Administration) were opened, whose attendees became the employees of the Mandatory Health Insurance Fund (MHIF).
1996
The first admission to the IAB evening program (Master of Business Administration) with specialization “Corporate management” was carried out on-job. The same year under the resolution of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan No. 1387 dated November 14 the Almaty School of Management was transformed to the International Academy of Business. Mr. Asylbek Bazarbayevich Kozhakhmetov was elected as the first president of the International Academy of Business.
1995
Competence and reliability of the Almaty School of Management, its real successes were highly appreciated by the American international organization “People to People International – PTPI”, which awarded with honorable “Birmingham’s Torch” for a successful economic survival and development in the conditions of the arising market relations.
1993
Originating of the idea of creation of IAB program and beginning of development of the program on administrative staff programs implementation.
1988
At the initiative of Mr. Asylbek Bazarbayevich Kozhakhmetov and other persons the Almaty School of Management (ASM) was founded for expansion of the active involvement in Kazakhstan related to preparation of highly skilled experts in all spheres of economics and management which annually trained managers of the highest, average level according to programs of professional development. Annually ASM trained about 200-500 persons.
