Urban Center

In 2020, the Center for Urban Studies and Urban Management was established, and in the 2020-2021 academic year, the Center developed and implemented this fundamentally new program "Urban Studies and Urban Management". AlmaU has launched a new program (Social Partnership in City Management, City Public Policy). Levels of study: UG (Bachelor of Business and Management).

 

 

The purpose of the programs is to form and develop students' competencies in the field of city management and urban agglomerations, as well as professional knowledge in the field of urban studies. Partners of the Center: JSC "Almaty City Development Center", KSU "Department of Urban Planning and Urban Planning" under the Akimat of Almaty. Urban studies is a field of science devoted to the development of urban systems and studies the structure, territorial and socio–economic organization and processes of the city's life.
Urban management is a set of knowledge, as well as forms, methods and technologies that ensure the most effective management of cities and municipalities. In addition, they help to work out the mechanisms of dialogue between citizens and the authorities and the resolution of various urban conflicts. AlmaU was the first to open this specialty after a thorough analysis of global trends in urban development and education. Students applied their knowledge in practice, for example, participated in the organization of a tactical urban site on the territory of the university together with the Q-Lab urban projects laboratory.

Description of the specialty:

Urban studies is a science dedicated to the development of urban systems, lies at the junction of several scientific disciplines - economic geography, demography, sociology of groups, etc. Urbanists study the laws by which a city is born and lives, they are engaged not only in the design and development of the city (urban planning, transport networks, etc.), but also in programming social interactions of groups and communities, designing organizational systems of the city. The field of interests of urbanists: the structure, territorial and socio-economic organization of the city and the processes taking place in it.

 

City management is a set of knowledge, as well as forms, methods and technologies
that ensure the most effective management of cities and municipalities.

The purpose of the educational program is the formation and development of students' competencies in the field of city management and urban agglomerations and professional knowledge in the field of urbanism and urban environment design. The educational program will introduce students to the main goals and objectives of urban studies, urban planning and management, as well as the main aspects of the functioning and development of urban spaces.

This trajectory involves an in-depth study of city management in the system of public administration, regional policy and local self-government (in a dual format), and urban project management.

Profile disciplines: management of the socio-cultural development of the metropolis, interaction of authorities, civil society and business in the development of the city (in a dual format), City security management.

Students will receive all the necessary knowledge and skills for qualified work in the future in municipal and local government bodies, as well as central government bodies, international, non-governmental and business structures whose activities are related to solving issues and problems of urban and internal regional development.
