Higher Education Service-Learning International Symposium in Hong Kong
November 12 - 17, 2018 Higher Education Service-Learning International Symposium “21 st CENTURY. SERVICE-LEARNING MODEL FOR INCLUSIVE GROWTH ”organized by Lingnan University.
Office of Service-Learning at Lingnan University has invited Dr. Gulmira Kurganbayeva to attend the Higher Education Service-Learning International Symposium “21 st CENTURY. SERVICE-LEARNING MODEL FOR INCLUSIVE GROWTH”
The event was attended by teachers, administrators of Service learning, employees and teachers of universities and secondary schools, researchers, youth leaders, corporate partners.
The symposium discussed strategies for implementing and evaluating initiatives in the field of service learning, how social changes and educational reforms will change S-L. Development of partnerships in the area of capacity building between institutions was reviewed, and a review of the current institutionalization stage of service learning in the region was conducted.
Speakers of this event were social development experts from international universities, including the organizer - Lingnan university, as well as representatives from various development centers. In their speeches they covered such topics as:
• "Education in the XXI century"
• “Global Talent Development through Service Learning”
• "Techno-innovation and education in the field of global citizenship"
• “Global Innovations in a Sustainable City”
• “Startup and Inclusive Entrepreneurship”
• “Cooperation within the framework of “One Belt - One Way” initiative
At the symposium, Rector of Almaty Management University Gulmira Kurganbaeva made a presentation on the global development of talent through service learning. During her speech, Gulmira Amanzholovna, spoke about development of education through spiritual intelligence, through Service-learning method. According to her, the use of this methodology in Kazakhstan led to positive results in the implementation of social projects among high school students of the 1st course. AlmaU Rector also stressed the importance of the development of spiritual intelligence. “A university where spiritual intelligence develops becomes a “territory of opinions” where values originate, a culture develops for a long time. In this case, the university becomes a platform for the exchange of ideas and solutions to the society problems. AlmaU has become one of the examples of application of Service-learning method, where the development of spiritual intelligence has contributed to society as a whole.”
Lingnan University is a university in Hong Kong which is considered as one of the oldest institutions in China. The university is completely private. All 12 academic faculties of the university conduct training for their students on a fee basis. Lingnan University is over 80 years. It was created on the basis of a private Catholic college, operating at the time when Hong Kong, as an administrative unit, was a part of the British Empire. At first, its students were children of employees of various diplomatic missions and officials of the local administration. The teaching staff was 100% foreign teachers. Over the time, Lingnan University has become the largest private institution of higher education. Today its status is international. Of the total number, only 70% of full-time students are citizens of China and natives of Hong Kong.
The level of education provided at Lingnan University ensures more than 1.5 thousand of its graduates successfully pass certification every year and get jobs in leading Chinese companies that are on the list of the 30 largest private and public corporations in China.
In 2012, 140 graduate students and university scientists were nominated for various scientific awards and prizes in various fields of science and art. On the university area there is an exhibition of modern art always open. Of 14 research laboratories operating at the university, each is bound by contractual obligations with international venture funds operating in the fields of biology, medicine, and robotics.
