AlmaU Takes Part in First Robotics Competition

On March 5 - 8, 2020, the regional qualifying round of FIRST Olympiad was held in Istanbul.

First robotics competition (FRC) is an annual international robotics tournament in which teams from all over the world participate.

This year, Kazakhstan took part in such a global competition in robotics for the first time.

ALMATY ROBOMAN #8420 team consisted of 12 people. It included students of AlmaU, Satbayev University, KBTU, AUES, IITU, TURAN, KNZHPU, CATEK, and students of  Hackspace School of Robotics (section in school №3), Lyceums No. 48, 54, No. 134, etc.

AlmaU was represented by Dean of School of Engineering Management Abeshev Kuanysh Shurabatyrovich and first-year student of "Information Systems" specialty Kubanychbek uulu Ruslan.

Two months before the start of the competition, the rules of the qualifying round were published on the official website of FirstInspires. FIST headquarters sent to the teams the basic kits for assembling the robot, which must be assembled in six weeks.

Kubanychbek uulu Ruslan: “This year the event was held at the highest level. For all teams from different countries, robots were very different from each other in their uniqueness. It was clear that the teams had come not just to participate but to compete for participation in the final, which will be held in the USA. On the first day of the competition, we had a problem that urgently needed to be solved: we were informed that our robot did not comply with the rules of the competition and we had to remake it almost completely. All this without outside help would take several days, but  volunteers of the competition helped us, they knew well engineering and robotics, and we remade it very quickly.

My task included: assembling and disassembling the robot, monitoring the state of the robot after each round, coordinating the team. In general, I really liked this contest and the trip. I got a lot of interesting experience. This year, Kazakhstan for the first time participated in such an international competition and knowing this, we tried our best to win prizes.

Participating in this competition I gained a lot of experience not only in robotics, but also in communication with people. "I met many teams from different countries, met personally with the organizers of the contest with Alex Francis Burchard and Jeeme Luce, and gained valuable experience."

We congratulate the participants of the competitions and wish not to be discouraged, because in future there will be exciting and large-scale competitions!
